엘리엇 얼윗이 찍은 강아지들

유독 짧게 느껴지는 새해 연휴가 지나고 있다. 아니, 거의 끄트머리에 도달하였다. ‘개의 해 The Year of Dog’를 맞이하여, 보도사진 작가 그룹이자 에이전시 매그넘 Magnum Photos은 엘리엇 얼윗 Elliot Erwitt이 20세기의 절반을 할애하여 찍은 개와 강아지 사진을 모아 소개했다.
1928년에 태어나 매그넘의 중추 역할을 한 전설적인 사진가는 거리에서 포착한 강아지 사진을 모아 전시를 열고, 책을 낼 정도로 이 분야(?)에서 독보적이다. 하지만 전략적으로 혹은 의식적으로 강아지 사진들을 찍은 것은 아니었다. 엘리엇 얼윗이 50년 이상 찍은 ‘개’ 사진을 모아 1998년 펴낸 사진집 도그, 도그스 Dog, Dogs는 우리 삶에 들어온 이 놀라운 생명체들이 어떻게 사람들 사이에서 존재하고 또 우리와 함께하는지 알려준다.
“사진 속 많은 개는 이국적인 환경에서 매력적으로 보였고, 다른 개들은 상당히 잘 구성된 사진 속에서 호소하는 듯 보였습니다. 지금 생각하면, 제 의견이 특별히 놀라운 것처럼 들리지 않아요. 우리와 더 가까운 곳에서 (개보다) 마음과 정서, 충성심의 자질을 지닌 다른 동물을 알지 못하니까요. 어떤 사람들은 코끼리가 가까이 다가온다고 말합니다. 개인적으로, 코끼리들은 너무 몸집이 크고 다루기 어려우며, 일상적인 사진 촬영을 위해 접근할 수 없고, 그렇게 긴 코로는 전혀 껴안고 싶지 않아요. 게다가, 개들처럼 모든 도시와 나라에서 길을 배회하지 않죠. 개들은 남의 시선을 의식하는 일 없이 사람이 찍는 사진에 쉽게 등장하고, 불평하지 않는 피사체입니다. Many of the dogs pictured must have looked appealing to me in their exotic settings, other dogs were appealing in reasonably well-composed photographs and some others seemed to transcend their easy obvious charm and to have allegorical connotations to us humans and our human condition. As I think about this now, my comments don’t sound particularly surprising. I don’t know of any other animals closer to us in qualities of heart, sentiment and loyalty. Some people say elephants come close. Personally, I find elephants too bulky, unwieldy and inaccessible for everyday photography and not at all cuddly or attractive with those big long noses. Besides, they do not roam the streets in every town and country like dogs do. And dogs make easy, uncomplaining targets without the self-conscious hang-ups and possible objections of humans caught on film.”

In this extract from a text written by the Magnum photographer, originally published in a book of his dog photographs, Elliot Erwitt explains why dogs went from an incidental part of his photographic practice to producing some of his most famous works. "I am a professional photographer by trade and an amateur photographer by vocation.
